WHITIREIA LAUNCHES "GO GREEN" RENTAL BIKES
September 2009
The Whitireia "Go Green" Rental Bike Programme was officially launched by the Mayor of Porirua Jenny Brash on Friday 25th September 2009.
The Mayor said She is glad that Porirua City is host to this green initiative and commends all the people behind the project, emphasizing the value for money, and the contribution to healthy lifestyles but points out the challenge on road safety for cyclists and the need for dedicated cycle lanes.
Other speakers attending the launch were also generous in their support.
•Arthur Graves Deputy CEO Whitireia Community Polytechnic said The NZ Green Bike Trust helps in greening the operations of the campus although he is not enthusiastic on getting the bicycle for himself.
•Dr Deborah Hume said The NZTA is proud to be a co-founder of this initiative which is a laudable programme that provides choices for students.
•Hon Winnie Laban MP said She is very proud of this programme because it embraces the healthy lifestyles of the people in Porirua, addresses the climate-change challenge and supports New Zealanders' value for people, the environment, and money and for healthy lifestyles.
•Hekia Parata MP said She commends Whitireia, NZTA, and NZGBT for coming up with this creative initiative. Green bikes promote wider community participation which is driven by volunteers and she hopes this programme will expand to other regions. She also agrees with the Mayor that there needs to be greater sensitivity from motorists towards cyclists and the urgency for more cycle lanes to be built.
•NZGBT Chairman, John Poppleton and WISA President Loretta Ryder said We are confident that all the rental bikes will be hired after the school holidays as advance bookings have already accounted for over half of those available.
The Go Green Rental Bike Programme was made possible with funding from The Porirua City Council, New Zealand Transport Agency, Vision Ltd, Whitireia Community Polytechnic and Sheppard Industries.
